Facebook and game studio Respawn Entertainment on Monday, April 26, notched their first win at the Oscars with Colette, a 24-minute documentary following World War II French Resistance member Colette Marin-Catherine’s first visit in Germany in 74 years.
The film follows the 90-year-old Colette Marin-Catherine as she visits the German concentration camp Mittelbau-Dora where her brother was killed. Marin-Catherine fought the Nazis as a young girl, and has since refused to step foot in Germany until a young history student named Lucie enters her life, and she prepares to confront her past.
Co-produced by Facebook-owned Oculus and Respawn Entertainment, known for their Titanfall and Apex Legends video games, the film won the award for best documentary short subject.
The companies expressed their excitement on Twitter:
Coincidentally, Marin-Catherine celebrated her 93rd birthday on the same day as the 93rd Oscars, according to the film’s Twitter page:
The film is directed by Anthony Giacchino, and produced by Alice Doyard, with The Guardian having distribution rights. Doyard in her Oscar acceptance speech said, “This award and this film is a tribute to all the women in the world of any ages that are joining hands to fight for justice.”
The Guardian released the film on its page here and on their YouTube page in November 2020.
In December 2020, the film was also distributed as part of the viewable gallery in Respawn’s Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond VR video game for the Oculus Rift and Steam VR platforms. It is also viewable on Oculus TV here. – Rappler.com
