A letter of love to the iPod Touch
Mark writes a letter to the iPod Touch, which is celebrating 8 years of vibrant memories today

Dear Touch,

You’re 8 years old now! Wow!

How long has it been since I last saw you? Four, five years? Five, right?

You just started in Fourth grade then, and I remember you were very excited because just like your sister, Phone, you finally have your own camera – and two of them too!

I must say, I haven’t really thanked you enough for how wonderful you have been, especially after what others had said. When I introduced you to the world, people talked about you like it was their job. Remember Jengadget and Ja|Net?

They visited us just to look at you and discuss with others how close you looked to Phone, as if you were from another set of genes to look like someone else.

When Teacher Ive took you under his wing in Second grade and thought you how to sing and even control how loud or soft your voice is, others only said how Phone had already done it (even though she mastered it only a month before). I was astounded that people judged by their own perception of what you should have been, instead of what you are and what you can do, though they shouldn’t be judging you in the first place.

However, it was those instances that I knew you are going to be great, because you understood that no matter what you do, they would trip you at every step. I told you then and I’ll tell you again, your only competition is yourself. You have to be better than you were yesterday.

Your Uncle Tim told me that you began speaking in Fifth grade, thanks to your Teacher Siri who took the time and effort to teach you the intricacies of language. A part of me was torn that I wasn’t able to converse with you when we were still together, but I am happy now that you don’t have to sing every word you say in a conversation.

He also told me that you have a lot of friends now. It wasn’t really hard to like you anyway. I mean, you were never the intimidating type compared to Phone, who always had her nanny Verisun at her side.

You’ve always been independent, and outgoing, and apparently fashionable too! Tim told me you wear a different color theme almost every day. You in a gold dress is my favorite.

He also said you’re in the track team now. Remember when you were younger and auditioned? You only ran at 620Mhz, which was far even for the Apple A1 league, but look at you now! My little girl dashing at 1.4Ghz and a contender for the Apple A8! Then you passed the 1GB RAM test and the mAh exam, gaining a 40-8 score. I’m really glad you can balance your academics and sport like a pro.

Watching you from afar, I can say everyone did a pretty good job of raising you, thanks of course to Uncle Cook who took you in.

I am proud of you, Touch. You stood your ground; you were never insecure, and you learned to develop yourself into something better.

We will see each other soon. Until then, keep on keeping up with your goals.

Always watching,
S.

The iPod Touch, first introduced in 2007, celebrates its 8th year today. From the beginning, reviewers always said how the device was good, but not good enough, with the iPhone being the standard. Others were really impressed with it, having almost the same set of features as the iPhone, without the hassle of a network contract.

It came up really short in its first version, with many reviewers irked about the absence of a speaker and physical volume buttons. From there, the iPod Touch improved steadily year after year, gaining a speaker and volume buttons at the second generation, cameras at the fourth, multiple color options at the fifth, and many more.
