The Samsung Galaxy S9: Expected specs and features
Samsung’s latest flagship will reportedly have an F/1.5 camera, with the Plus version sporting dual rear cameras

MANILA, Philippines – If the leaks pouring in everyday are actually true, then there’s barely anything left for Samsung to reveal that their fans do not yet know about. Below’s a quick rundown of all the leaked information put out so far.

Design

According to an anonymous Redditor who allegedly got hands-on time with the device, the Galaxy S9 is not all that different from its predecessor, the S8, when it comes to design. It retains the headphone jack, slightly repositions the rear fingerprint scanner for it to function better, and has stereo speakers.

The fingerprint sensor is said to have been repositioned below the cameras, and not beside them as it had been in the S8 and S8+. (READ: Review: The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is a workhorse)

German tech site, WinFuture recently published renders showing color schemes the Galaxy S9 will be available in: Midnight Black, Lilac Purple, Coral Blue, and Titanium Grey.

Here’s a leaked image from leaker Evan Blass:

Display

Not a lot has changed in the display when compared to its predecessors with both the Galaxy S9 and S9+ still sporting a 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch AMOLED screen with 2960×1440 resolution and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The screen has also been reworked to have smaller bezels at the bottom, according to WinFuture.

Cameras

Cameras have been improved for both phones adding in variable apertures for better low light shooting. Both the S9 and S9+ will reportedly have 12MP F/1.5 aperture rear shooters. While the resolution is the same as the S8 series, the aperture is larger compared to the predecessor’s F/1.7 opening.

A larger aperture (in aperture-speak, the smaller the number, the larger the opening) means more light coming in, which generally means more capable lowlight shooting. (WATCH: Samsung reveals the Galaxy S8 at Samsung Unpacked 2017)

The S9+ will have the advantage of having a second camera with an F/2.4 aperture optimized for portrait shooting and will have 2X optical zoom. On the front of both phones sits an 8-megapixel front camera with F/1.7 aperture and autofocus – the same as the S8 series.

Adding to this, the Redditor has said that cameras can now capture 4K video recording at 60fps, 1080p at 240fps, and 720p at 480fps. The S9 line will also be able to capture 960fps slow-mo recording – a feat once exclusive to Sony’s flagship Xperia phones from 2017.

Specs

Internally, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ is expected to house a Snapdragon 845 chip in the US or a Samsung Exynos 9810 in most other markets, 4GB and 6GB of RAM respectively, 64GB UFS 2.1 of storage with rumors of having 256GB and 512GB variants down the line, microSD support, face and iris recognition, and 3000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries respectively. Battery size is the same as the S8 and S8+’s

Both phones will be running Android 8.0 with support of Samsung’s soon-to-be introduced 3D emoji feature.

Price

As previously noted, the Galaxy S9’s should be more expensive than its predecessor with it hovering at £739, roughly P54,400. The S8 launched at £689.

Expect to hear more about the S9 and the S9+ in Samsung’s Unpacked event on February 25, US time.

One last reminder: the specs and features listed here are not yet from official communications from the manufacturer, Samsung. Consider these as approximations that may still change when Samsung officially reveals the phones. – Rappler.com
