MANILA, Philippines – Smart recently launched its LTE network in Batanes, giving the region’s 17,000-strong population and tourists what may be their most viable option ever to connect to the internet. (READ: Batanes now LTE-connected)
We were able to experience it ourselves, having attended the launch earlier this month and having visited some of the province’s tourist spots. At every spot, we tested the internet speed using the Speedtest mobile app by US-based global internet metrics company Ookla. (READ: Globe turns on LTE in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi)
The highest speeds we got were 41.0 Mbps (download speed) and 8.77 Mbps (upload speed), recorded at the Tayid Mahatao lighthouse:
The lowest 1.54 Mbps (download speed) and 5.60 Mbps (upload) speed, which were recorded, coincidentally, at another lighthouse, the Basco Lighthouse on Naidi Hill, as seen in the screenshot below.
Maximum download speed for current LTE networks is 42 Mbps while upload speed is 25 Mbps.
Two spots had no signal, the area surrounding a Japanese man-made tunnel built in World War II and Boulder Bay.
