Apple announces 'smallest 5G phone in the world' with new iPhone 12 mini

Apple on Wednesday, October 14, Philippine time, announced the iPhone 12 mini, sporting a 5.4-inch display.

The iPhone 12 mini is priced at $699, taking the spot of the base iPhone 11 when it launched last year. The base iPhone 12 is priced at $799, giving consumers another option before the more expensive Pro and Pro Max models at $999, and $1,099 respectively. The iPhone 11 also gets a price cut, going down to $599.

The base iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch screen.

Apple says that the "iPhone 12 mini is the smallest, thinnest, and lightest 5G smartphone in the world." From top competitors, Samsung has the 6.2-inch S20 5G, while Huawei has the 6.1-inch P40.

The iPhone 12 phones are the first from Apple to offer faster, lower latency 5G wireless capabilities.

All phones in the line will sport an A14 Bionic chip, which debuted on the iPad Air 4 announced last month – the first time in a long while that a new chip came out on another Apple device aside from an iPhone.

A new "Ceramic Shield" front cover protects the iPhone 12 screen, available for all variants. The technology, co-developed with Corning, is said to have 4x tougher drop performance than previous iPhones.

The iPhone 12 and 12 mini will come in blue, green, black, white, and (PRODUCT)RED

Apple reintroduces the MagSafe branding on the iPhone 12, offering accessories that provide fast wireless charging, and a new ecosystem of products such as cases and wallets that attach to the iPhone magnetically.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini features an aluminum finish, and will come in blue, green, black, white, and (PRODUCT)RED. Pre-orders in the US and other regions for iPhone 12 begin on October 16, with availability on October 23. The iPhone 12 mini will be available for pre-order beginning November 6, with availability on November 13.

The iPhone 12 and 12 mini sport a dual camera setup with a wide and ultra-wide lens like the base iPhone 11

Like the iPhone 11, the 12 will have an IP68 rating for water resistance up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, and Super Retina XDR displays. The 12 and 12 mini will also have a dual camera system (wide and ultrawide) like the base iPhone 11. But the wide lens is said to have been improved with a wider f/1.6 aperture for better lowlight photography.

The iPhone 12 can also record HDR video with Dolby Vision, an attractive option for those who'd want cinema-style color grading on their phone videos.
