OPPO’s new budget phone, the A74 4G, hit stores in the first week of April for P11,999. We recently got a chance to test out the unit for ourselves.
Out of the box, I was pleasantly surprised that it looked more expensive than its price tag would suggest. Its back has the same frosted finish as I’d found in the more expensive A94. The all-black rear camera array keeps things looking elegant. It’s great to see OPPO keep things toned down, especially with its lower-priced models. Often, you’d find lower-priced models attempting flashy designs that just get a little too loud.
Powering the phone is a Snapdragon 662 chip and 6GB RAM, a common configuration found in this price range, as seen on competing units such as variants of the Xiaomi Redmi 9 and the realme 7i.
It’s great to see a big AMOLED display on the A74 , measuring at 6.43 inches. As with all AMOLEDs, the display looks sharp, and sports good contrast.
On the front is a 16MP camera, and a triple-camera setup on the back comprised of a 48MP wide shooter, a 2MP macro, and a 2MP depth sensor. I love that it has a macro option in the price range, and the 5x digital zoom is surprisingly stable and usable as well. The phone doesn’t have huge camera or performance gimmicks to lure in users, but instead provides a solid, very usable package.

Perhaps its key standout feature is its big 5,000 mAh battery. Anytime a phone has a 5,000 mAh battery, that’s always a plus in our books. It’s also a dual SIM unit with a dedicated microSD slot compatible with up to 256GB microSDs.
A 5G version is coming though, so if you’ve been looking to set yourself up for future use, you may want to wait for that, and hope that the price bump isn’t too huge from the 4G version. – Rappler.com
