OPPO on Tuesday, November 17, revealed a new concept smartphone with a rollable, expanding display, and new augmented reality (AR) glasses as part of its annual tech conference, Inno Day 2020.

The OPPO X 2021 rollable concept smartphone has a display that can be pulled out to expand from a diagonal of 6.7 inches to as large as 7.4 inches. The display is said to be seamless, as if it’s expanding and contracting magically.

The secret, according to OPPO, are 3 proprietary technologies: a “Roll Motor” powertrain that powers the movement, generating a constant force to ensure that the display rolls out evenly; a “2-in-1 Plate” display support technology that ensures that the display is evenly supported no matter the length at which it is expanded, and ensures no creases; and a “Warp Track” high-strength screen laminate for protection.

Current foldable phones have a visible crease on their display. The concept phone from OPPO looks to solve that with a rollable form factor as opposed to a foldable one. LG and TCL are other phone makers, which have teased rollable phone concepts.

OPPO also introduced the AR Glass 2021, the brand’s second AR concept, following the 2020 concept revealed at last year’s Inno Day. OPPO has yet to release a commercial version. OPPO says the 2021 model is 75% lighter than last year’s version.

The device will have several cameras and sensor allowing for smartphone interactions, gesture-based interactions, and fast, real-time spatial localization.

Like all concept devices, the final commercial version of the technologies found in these concepts may vary wildly. The rollable concept may be the most promising here. Although likely to be expensive, its promise of crease-free screen may liven up the flexible phone wars. – Rappler.com
