Qualcomm announces 888 Plus 5G flagship chipset

Qualcomm

The Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G pushes the main CPU core speed from 2.84 GHz in the original 888 to 2.995 GHz

Qualcomm on Monday, June 28, announced its newest flagship mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G, a follow-up to the Snapdragon 888.

The 888 Plus features a Kyro 680 Prime CPU with a clock speed of 2.995GHz compared to the 888’s 2.84GHz, and a Qualcomm AI Engine capable of 32 trillion operations per second (TOPS) compared to the 888’s 26 TOPS. The seven other CPU cores and its X60 5G modem are the same ones found on the original 888.

Tech site Anandtech noted one unusual development was the lack of an upgrade for GPU performance, which had usually been present in the Snapdragon “Plus” models, but argued the current Adreno 660 GPU is already running at the best performance-to-energy ratio. Any further push for speed would not have had significant performance effects.

About 130 smartphone models and mobile devices are in the works to carry the platform from the likes of Xiaomi, Honor, Vivo, and ASUS.
