‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ game announced

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Star-Lord's squad readies up for its foray into gaming

Square Enix

The game comes out October 26, 2021

Square Enix on Monday, June 14 announced a new Marvel game, following last year’s Marvel’s Avengers.

Star-Lord and his space-faring squad are the newest Marvel faces to get the videogame treatment. Guardians of the Galaxy will be released on October 26, 2021 for the PS5, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PC, and the GeForce Now cloud gaming platform.

Development will be headed by Eidos-Montréal, known for their work on the Deus Ex games, and for giving Crystal Dynamics a hand in developing the Avengers game.

Like the Avengers game, Guardians of the Galaxy will not be using the likeness of the Marvel Cinematic Universe actors, such as Chris Pratt who played Star-Lord in the movies. Not seeing the actual actors in the videogame has been a common complaint among fans, but that likely won’t change soon seeing that A-list Hollywood actors would likely put studios over the budget.

The official line for the game developers though is that they want to create their own spin on these games, at least according to creative director Shaun Escayg in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

In any case, character likeness was just one of the issues that the Avengers game had. One could point to the lackluster gameplay as a bigger issue – and one that Guardians of the Galaxy has the chance of fixing.

Based on the trailer, it also appears that Star-Lord may be the only character playable as opposed to Avengers, which lets players take control of several members. We’ll see if this more focused gameplay design choice will result in a more engaging experience.

At the very least and in its current form, it looks like the humor is translating well, with a few trademark silly moments (“Gardeners of the Galaxy,” “Sun-Lord”) in the trailer. – Rappler.com
