Sony’s next big PlayStation exclusive, Horizon Forbidden West, has been confirmed to launch on February 18, 2022 as confirmed on the PlayStation blog, Wednesday, August 25, US time.

Prior to the announcement, there was some belief that the game would arrive in late 2021. Hermen Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios, said in a June blog entry that a holiday release seemed viable if uncertain.

“For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season. But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can,” Hulst said.

Mathijs de Jonge, game director at Horizon developer Guerilla Games, explained that the speed of development has also been affected by the pandemic.

“It’s no surprise that our teams were hugely impacted by the global pandemic; we have been adjusting to new workflows, protocols, and other challenges, while keeping our teams safe and prioritizing a healthy work/life balance,” De Jonge said.

The studio revealed gameplay footage for the first time in May 2021.

At the time of the gameplay reveal, De Jonge said, “Horizon Forbidden West had just passed a major milestone and we had entered the final stage of development; on track, but a bit uncertain if we’d be able to polish the game to the level of quality we strive for.”

“While the decision to move the game’s launch to 2022 certainly wasn’t easy, we’d like to take a moment to thank all of our fans for their unwavering support; we know how much you’ve been looking forward to reuniting with Aloy and her friends, continuing her story, and exploring a new and more dangerous world,” he said then.

Pre-orders for Forbidden West begins on September 2, 2021 for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (PS5). The studio also announced that a performance patch has been released for the first game in the series, Horizon Zero Dawn, which will give PS5 players a 60 frames-per-second boost. – Rappler.com
