Netflix hires former EA and Oculus executive Mike Verdu as vice president of game development

Netflix is reportedly making a push to offer video games on its platform.

Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, July 14, it has hired Mike Verdu to spearhead work on that front as vice president of game development. Verdu was previously senior vice president at Electronic Arts, with a focus on mobile games, and also served as vice president for virtual and augmented reality gaming at Facebook’s Oculus division.

Netflix said Verdu would be reporting to chief operating officer Greg Peters.

It appears Netflix will want to make its own games for play on the streaming platform, according to a person cited by Bloomberg who requested anonymity due to the private nature of deliberations. Games would thus show up as a new programming genre on the service. The report added Netflix doesn’t currently plan to charge additional fees for games.

The move follows a 2018 attempt to show interactive entertainment on the platform. The Black Mirror Bandersnatch episode allowed the viewer to choose how the story progressed during the the episode.

Pushing for Netflix to enter video games may also allow the company to justify price increases for a value-added service to the platform. – Rappler.com
