Samsung goes big with the Galaxy Note 5, S6 Edge+
The first devices will come out in US and Canada on August 21, with pre-orders available a few hours after the Unpacked event

MANILA, Philippines – At Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event on August 13, the company announced two new smartphone variants for multimedia consumers and multitaskers alike: The Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5.

The two smartphones have similar specs, with both sporting a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED 2560 x 1440 (518ppi) display. The multimedia-friendly S6 Edge+ also comes with dual edge screens, while the Note 5 uses a stylus for multitasking.

Both take advantage of an Octa-core (2.1GHz Quad + 1.5GHz Quad), 64 bit processor and 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and will also come in 32 and 64GB versions. Neither appear to have expansion slots for additional storage.

The two phones will also use a 16 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera.

Both phones will also support Near Field Communication (NFC) and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) payment types.

On the S6 Edge+

The S6 Edge+ also features an ‘Apps edge’ for quick access to your chosen applications, as well as an enhanced ‘People edge’ for easy communications with preferred contacts.

‘Apps edge’ allows users to access their favorite apps by just swiping the edge display. ‘People edge’ helps users to connect their close contacts easily. From the edge screen, users can quickly find their pre-set contacts and send message or give a call directly.

On the Note 5

The Note 5 is said to be designed following the legacy of the Galaxy S6, fitting in one hand with a narrow bezel and curved back.

It also takes advantage of the all new S Pen, which has improved writing capabilities and a number of other practical tools, such as a unique clicking mechanism, and the ability to jot down information on the phone even when the screen is off.

More features for both devices

With the S6 Edge+and the Note 5, fast wireless charging will allow for a full charge in around 120 minutes. Meanwhile, a wired charge will let you get a full charge in approximately 90 minutes.

Both are further upgraded to support SideSync, offering wireless and wired PC to smartphone integration of files and data across all platforms and operating systems.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Note 5 also features the enhanced security features with built-in KNOX Active Protection and My KNOX, an easy-to-use application, to better protect sensitive data on your phone.

Samsung also announced that both devices would be available on August 21, with pre-orders beginning later at 3:00 pm. The devices will come in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium, and will have availability and launches in other countries varying by markets and mobile carriers. – Rappler.com
