MANILA, Philippines – Following the launch of the Android M developer preview back in May, Google’s Android team said Monday, August 17, that it was officially calling the latest version of the operating system “Android Marshmallow.”
Android has a history of naming its releases after sweet food items, such as lollipops (Android 5.0) and KitKat bars (Android 4.4).
In an announcement post, Jamal Eason, product manager for Android, also introduced the official Android 6.0 SDK (software development kit), which is now available for download via the SDK Manager in Android Studio.
“With the Android 6.0 SDK,” Eason explained, “you have access to the final Android APIs (application program interface) and the latest build tools so that you can target API 23.”
Notable in the new version of Android is its new permissions model. It streamlines application installation, and then allows users to fine tune what sort of permissions they want to allow on a particular app.
As such, app developers are told that “it’s important that you update your app to target API 23, and test the app thoroughly with Android Marshmallow users.”
Google also reiterated that Android Marshmallow will go live for consumers “this fall.” – Rappler.com
