MANILA, Philippines – If you’re wondering what the current record-holder is for solid state drives (SSDs), Samsung has the answer for you.

The company announced Thursday, March 3, that Samsung’s PM1633a – a massive 15.36 terabyte SSD – is now shipping for enterprise solutions looking for the best storage money can buy. Best of all, Samsung’s 15.36TB SSD requires no extra space as it’s a 2.5-inch drive.

Samsung explained that this dense storage space is achieved by “combining 512 of Samsung’s 256Gb V-NAND memory chips. The 256Gb dies are stacked in 16 layers to form a single 512GB package, with a total of 32 NAND flash packages in the 15.36TB drive.”

Samsung added that “the PM1633a line-up provides significant performance and reliability upgrades from its predecessor, the PM1633, which used Samsung’s 2nd generation, 32-layer, 128Gb V-NAND memory.”

The 15.36TB PM1633a drive supports 1 DWPD (drive writes per day). This allows companies to overwrite an entire drive’s worth of data without failure daily. The drive can also write from two to 10 times as much data as typical SATA SSDs.

The one thing missing from Samsung’s announcement: a ballpark price.

Ars Technica noted in its report that the previous generation’s PM1633 products cost about $1,000 per terabyte, so you may likely expect a prohibitively expensive device as a layman.

Such a price, however, may be a pittance for enterprises requiring that much space. – Rappler.com
