MANILA, Philippines – Google announced late Thursday, June 30, that had it teamed up with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to provide up-to-date information on earthquakes to its search results.

Users can perform a Google search for “earthquake” or “earthquakes near me” to yield an information card with an updated list of earthquakes that have recently occurred.

The information cards will note the area of the quake and how strong it was, and will also provide users with information on staying safe in the aftermath of the quake.

In a statement, USGS Earthquake Hazards Program Coordinator Dr William Leith said, “Ensuring that our earthquake information gets to the people who need it is very important to the US Geological Survey, and we are pleased that Google is finding creative approaches to help make that happen.”

The earthquake information cards are searchable via English searches, though it is hoped that they can also be made available in other languages. – Rappler.com
