MANILA, Philippines – Sony may be announcing more than just a high-end PlayStation 4 (PS4) in the near future.

A new Wall Street Journal report on Sunday, August 21 (August 22, Manila time) said Sony is going to come out with a new standard model of the PS4.

The report cites “people familar with the matter,” explaining that the announcements were an effort to maintain demand for the PS4, which has sold more than 40 million units as of late May. (LOOK: Is this the PlayStation 4 slim?)

This is in addition to a PS4 unit – codenamed the “PS4.5” or “Neo” – that has enhanced graphics capabilities, which they previously confirmed back in June. 

Sony will be holding a press conference at the PlayStation Theater in New York on September 7, with a spokesperson saying the company will be talking about its PlayStation 4 business at the event.

If the news holds up, the upgrade path will be similar to Microsoft’s current set of upgrades for the Xbox One. Microsoft previously announced a smaller version of the Xbox One, dubbed the Xbox One S, as well as a more powerful version of the console, known as Project Scorpio, at E3. – Rappler.com
