The 20 YouTube videos Filipinos watched the most in 2016

MANILA, Philippines – Just like Twitter sharing the top moments and the top users from the Philippines in 2016, YouTube has shared their most momentous highlights from the year that was. 

On Wednesday, December 7, US time, the video-sharing site released its annual year-ender dubbed “YouTube Rewind 2016” which featured the year’s most memorable hits and trends. These include Japanese comedian Pikotaro’s “Pen-pineapple-apple-pen (PPAP)” video, English host James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” series, and participative trends like the “Mannequin Challenge” and “Running Man Challenge.” 

These were the big global hits of 2016.

YouTube also shared its list for the year’s most trending videos among Filipinos, via an email to Rappler. The videos were divided into two categories: music and non-music.

Cover songs dominated the music category. The Philippines has always been a country in love with revivals and alternative versions of hit tunes – and this fondness has apparently found its way into YouTube. Four of the top 5 in the list are all covers, although the highest views magnet is the sing-along “lyric video” of international duo Chainsmokers’ “Closer.”

Following the worldwide hit is Goin’ Bulilit alumna Kristel Fulgar’s cover of “Secret Love Song,” originally sung by British girl group Little Mix. Another cover of the same song, this time by Voice of the Philippines’ finalist Morissette Amon, nabs the 3rd top spot.

In the non-music video category, the mighty PPAP video reigns supreme, filling the need of Filipinos for lighthearted stuff in what has been a challenging year for many. The list also highlights what the country loves watching when it’s not listening to cover songs: dancing. In 4th to 6th spots are the rump-shaking video set to pop hit “Trumpets,” an acrobatic performance on “Pilipinas Got Talent,” and a dance cover of Rihanna’s “Work.” 

Also big hits: kid videos. A video showing a kid hunting for toys and eggs that contain goodies in a big inflatable playground ranks 2nd to PPAP. Nursery rhyme videos find themselves in 8th and 9th spot. If “Wedding of the Year” awards were based on YouTube views, Vic Sotto and Pauleen Luna’s nuptial would win as it grabs the 10th and final spot on the list below:
