Google Drive desktop app to shut down, service to continue
Only the app is being shut down and replaced, and not the actual service

MANILA, Philippines – Google has announced that it is shutting down the desktop app for Google Drive for Windows and Mac.

The company will stop supporting the app on December 11, 2017. The app will stop working completely on March 12, 2018.

The mobile apps for iOS and Android will continue to work.

To clarify, Google is only shutting down the app, and not the service itself. Google Drive services will remain accessible via web browsers.

In October, the Google Drive app will start sending notifications to users about its impending demise.

Replacing the Google Drive app are two options: Backup and Sync for consumers and Drive File Stream for enterprise G Suite subscribers. The former works pretty much the same way as Drive – a syncing tool between desktop and the cloud.

Drive File Stream  has extra features designed for larger-scale use. Users of the new app can access team drives and choose to sync individual files. It lets users stream the files from the cloud instead of storing them onto a local drive – a feature that helps save storage space for companies and ensures that company files aren’t automatically saved in physical hard drives.
