‘Dota 2’ gets ‘battle royale’ game mode
The popular game takes notice of the phenomenal rise of 'battle royale' games such as 'PUBG' and 'Fortnite'

MANILA, Philippines – The massive success of genre-defining games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Fortnite has inspired developers to capture the magic of battle royale by incorporating elements of it in their own games. Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), Dota 2 is the latest to do so with the announcement of a new game mode called “The Underhollow.”

“Battle through a labyrinth filled with monsters, marvels, and many other three-player enemy squads as you search for Roshan’s rarest cheese and work to be the last team standing. You’ll need to navigate carefully to earn the XP and Gold needed to destroy your opponents,” Valve said in their announcement.

While battle royale games are mostly third or first person shooters, the last team standing mechanic, competitive play, and an unstable map are staples of the genre.

The newly announced game mode will be available for those who purchased the 2018 International Battle Pass. Purchasing the pass helps fund the game’s upcoming “The International” tournament prize pool and in exchange, players get exclusive access to downloadable content including in-game cosmetics and new game modes.

Aside from “The Underhollow,” Battle Pass owners also get access to other new game modes like “Cavern Crawl” and “Mutation Mode.” – Rappler.com
