MANILA, Philippines – The Switch experience gets lighter and cheaper as Nintendo announces a “lite” version for its popular Switch console, coming in yellow, gray, and turquoise. 

The Switch will be portable-only unlike the original Switch which could be connected to a TV. The Joy-Con controllers will also not be removable and will have no HD Rumble feature and the IR motion sensors. Players, however, will be able to connect separately bought Joy-Con controllers to the Switch Lite for use in certain games.

Compared to the original, the Lite will have a smaller screen: 5.5 inches compared to the original 6.2-inch screen. The 720p resolution is retained. 

The new console will be priced at $199 when it comes out on September 20. It’s $100 less than the original Switch. 

The Lite has a battery life that’s longer by about half an hour compared to the original Switch. The Lite will range from 3 to 7 hours while the original’s battery life is listed at 2.5 to 6.5 hours. Consequently, with the smaller size, it weighs a little lighter. The original Switch with the controllers on is 398 grams while the Lite is 275 grams.

“Adding Nintendo Switch Lite to the lineup gives gamers more color and price point options,” said Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser. “Now consumers can choose the system that best suits how they like to play their favorite Nintendo Switch games.”

All the Switch games that support handheld mode will be playable on the Switch Lite, although Nintendo says there will be some restrictions. Nintendo adds that specific game compatibilty details will be listed on the back of the game packaging and on the Nintendo eShop. 

There will be cross-play between Switch and Switch Lite owners for compatible titles such as Super Mario Maker 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate via Nintendo Switch Online or local wireless multiplayer. – Rappler.com
