Huawei wants a slice of the tablet pie dominated by Apple, releases aluminum LTE tablets at MWC 2014

MANILA, Philippines — Huawei continues to challenge other big players in the tablet market with the release of two new tablets at the 2014 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Unveiled at its Unlock Possibilities event on Sunday, February 23, the MediaPad X1 7.0 and MediaPad M1 8.0 are an attempt by the Chinese manufacturer to own a piece of the market currently dominated by Apple’s iPad.

Both tablets are LTE enabled devices with a sim card slot that not only allow users to surf the Internet but also make phone calls and send/receive text messages.

MediaPad M1 8.0

The M1 8.0 is an uber-thin, all aluminum 8-inch tablet.

Reminiscent of the HTC One’s elegant design, the M1 8.0 has dual DTS stereo speakers above and below the display and is 7.9mm in thick.

In keeping with the company’s overall strategy aimed at dominating the low-cost market segment the tablet features a humble spec sheet including a 1280 x 800 HD IPS display, a 1.6GHz quad core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 5-megapixel auto-focus main camera. Huawei claims its 4,800 mAh battery can last up to three days on normal use.

The MediaPad M1 8.0 will be available in black and white and is scheduled for release in the 1Q of 2014, no pricing has been announced.

MediaPad X1 7.0

The smaller yet more expensive of the two Huawei tablets, the MediaPad X1 7.0 comes with a more impressive spec sheet. At 7.18mm it is also one of the thinnest tablets in the market today.

Like the M1, the X1 is powered by a Kirin 910 1.6GHz quad-core processor but comes with a 7-inch, Full HD 1200 x 1920 display with a pixel density of 323 PPI, 16GB of storage and 13 and 5-megapixel main and front facing cameras respectively.

The tablet runs on an impressive 5,000 mAh battery, expected to give a boost of up to 3.5 days on normal use. This will challenge even the most well-loved high-end tablets like the Google Nexus 7 that fail to live up to battery expectations.

The MediaPad M1 7.0 will be available in black, white, champagne and light pink and is slated for a March 2014 release. — Rappler.com
