MANILA, Philippines – Privacy-conscious email users may have a new service available to them in the form of Lavaboom, a Germany-based encrypted email service.
Lavaboom works on a system it calls zero-knowledge privacy. Users can personally encrypt and decrypt emails from their browser by using JavaScript codes.
The service Lavaboom provides allows users to send and receive messages that have already been encrypted, preventing government agencies and the like from extracting information from the emails.
This system, along with German privacy laws, also means Lavaboom can’t give anyone unencrypted emails or keys.
According to Lavaboom’s general FAQ, “German law enforcement agencies are not allowed to request data from Lavaboom. They can only issue warrants, however we only accept warrants approved by the High Court in Karlsruhe, Germany. Germany also does not recognise Safe Harbor regulations like other EU member states.”
The Lavaboom service, which is currently in beta testing, is accepting signups. It plans to start inviting users in groups of 200 weekly beginning April 21 on a first-come, first-served basis, with free accounts that have 250MB of storage space. Subscribers can get 1GB of space for around US$11 monthly. – Rappler.com
