Samsung launches Level; premium audio for smartphones
The Samsung Level series is Samsung’s first attempt to capture the growing portable audio market driven particularly by the smartphone boom. Four devices were launched at the event: Level Over, Level On, Level In, and Level Box.
It’s the logical next step for Samsung low-hanging fruit, considering Samsung’s latest high-end smartphones, the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S5, have digital to analog converters capable of playing high quality audio.
“Samsung understands the importance of music and audio in the lives of our consumers,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communication at Samsung Electronics. “With the Level series, we have crafted an incredible line of audio products designed for the mobile user with organic sound, premium design aesthetics, and optimized mobile audio controls.”
Level Over Clearly the flagship device, the Level Over is reminiscent of the interior of a luxury car with large, beige, leather cushioned cans (black leather on the black model) and a padded headband. Matching its fancy exterior, the device also has all the bells and whistles one would want – wireless connectivity, noise cancellation, even touch controls.
Samsung said the 50mm cans on the Level Over are made of a material called Neodymium, which produces more natural sound. The outsides of the headphones function as a touch-pad with gestures for volume and track control; a built-in microphone allows you to take calls and dictate commands via S-Voice to a paired smartphone; and NFC connectivity enables a feature called "Tap To Pair" – simply tap an NFC-enabled smartphone to establish a Bluetooth connection.
Level OnLevel On, the smaller, lighter and cheaper, wired version of the Level Over comes with 40mm dual-layered diaphragm dynamic drivers and voice controls. No NFC connectivity and built-in touch pad.
Level InIn-ear headphones that will directly rival Apple’s EarPods, Level In has 3 speakers on each side, one for midrange, treble, and a dynamic driver which handles power and bass. These earbuds come with both a selection of silicone and memory foam ear tips.
Level BoxA compact Bluetooth speaker box with 56mm stereo speakers, the design of the Level Box is supposed to provide improved noise reduction and echo cancellation. The all-metal Level Box also comes with NFC for "Tap To Pair" and a built-in microphone for voice calls. Samsung says the portable speakers will last 15 hours on a single charge.
All devices are available in black and white, and will be available globally beginning mid-May 2014. – Rappler.com
