Samsung working on virtual reality headset
The tech giant is rushing to get its product to the market before rivals Oculus and Sony

MANILA, Philippines – Samsung is reportedly planning on joining the revived virtual reality (VR) market and it is doing it fast.

A source close to the company told Engadget that a VR headset is in the works and is set to be announced later this year. In typical Samsung-fashion the tech giant is rushing to get the device out as soon as possible in hopes that it can beat Oculus and Sony to market.

Both companies have showed off working prototypes but the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 and Sony’s Project Morpheus are designed for gaming consoles while the upcoming Samsung VR headset will be a companion product for the company’s lineup of smartphones and tablets.

Prototypes of the Samsung VR headset have reportedly be sent out to Android developers and are being tested using the company’s current crop of flagship models but the final product is expected to only work with next-gen devices as there seems to be a higher power requirement.

No specs were revealed except that the device will have an OLED screen comparable to the one on the Oculus DK2. It is unclear if it will include an external camera like the Oculus and Sony but the source says this should not be confused with another Samsung device rumored to be in the works – a version of Google Glass.

As for pricing, Samsung is said to be targeting a “low price” point; again, to beat Oculus and Sony. Sony showed off Project Morpheus last March 18 but says a consumer product won’t be arriving this year.  Facebook-owned Oculus sells the DK2 for $350. – Rappler.com
