Samsung unveils premium Galaxy Tab S tablet
The new flagship tablet is available in 8.4 and 10.5-inch models and features a high-def AMOLED display

MANILA, Philippines – Samsung unveiled a new premium line of tablets at its Premiere 2014 “Tab Into Color” event at the Madison Square Garden in New York on Thursday, June 12 (June 13 in Manila).

Now its flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab S is also the Korean tech giant’s thinnest and lightest tablet in the market today.

The headline feature of the Tab S is a new Super AMOLED display. Current Samsung tablets have LCD TFTs. The Super AMOLED display provides more vibrant and saturated images with darker blacks. The Tab S comes with a WQXGA (2560 x 1600) resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

“The tablet is becoming an increasing popular device for viewing and consuming content, which makes the display quality a critical feature,” said Samsung IT & Mobile CEO & President JK Shin. “With the launch of the Galaxy Tab S, Samsung is setting the industry bar far beyond anything that has previously been available in a tablet.”

Because AMOLED technology doesn’t require a backlight, the Galaxy Tab S consumes less energy than comparative LCD displays. It also takes up a slimmer profile. Both models are 6.6 mm thick and weigh only 465g (10.5-inch) and 294g (8.4-inch).

Similar to its flagship smartphone the Galaxy S5 the Tab S comes with a fingerprint scanner for unlocking the device. It also includes the popular Ultra-Power Saving Mode that dramatically improves battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S will come in WiFi and WiFi + LTE variants, 16 and 32GB configurations and in Titanium Bronze, Dazzling White and Glam Red (for 8.4-inch only) variants.

Samsung will sell the Tab S in some markets as early as June 2014. In the Philippines the device WiFi + LTE version will go on sale in mid July. There is currently no word on pricing.  – Rappler.com
