iStick is the USB drive for your iPhone, iPad
Kickstarter-backed project raises more than $1M, device starts shipping in August

MANILA, Philippines – One of the most frustrating things about being an iPhone or iPad user is not being able to share files easily.

Apple has made it painfully difficult to share files between devices – the default method is via an iTunes Sync, then there’s cloud storage service iCloud, or if you’re diligent you can send files via email or iMessage.

On Android file sharing is very straight forward. There’s Bluetooth, NFC + WiFi, and a technology called USB OTG which allows you to connect a special USB drive directly to your device’s microUSB port.

If the pain of Apple users could be quantified, it’s currently over a million US dollars. That’s the amount of pledges that have come in to support a new KickStarter project by a company called Sanho Corporation, makers of the fancy HyperJuice power bank for the MacBook Pro.

The already existing product is called iStick the “world’s first USB drive with a Lightning connector.” The company has already received the all important Apple MFi, made for iPhone/iPad certification.

Launched in May 2014 the Kickstarter project aimed to raise $100,000. On Monday, June 16, hours before the end of funding, it had raised well over $1-million more than 10x its original goal. Backers of the project get 50% off the device’s retail price.

The device works in tandem with the iStick iOS app. When plugged into your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch users can view photos and documents, watch movies, and listen to music stored on the device without having to copy them over.

You can also copy files over to your iOS device or transfer files to iStick and then connect to your computer like you would any regular USB thumb drive. The app also also allows you to backup your contacts and/or camera roll.

The device will retail for $129 (8GB), $169 (16GB), $199 (32GB), $299 (64GB) and $399 (128GB) when it ships in August 2014.
