MANILA, Philippines – There was once a time when queuing days in advance to get the next iPhone was a rite of passage for any Apple fanboy. There never were enough iPhones to meet the demand and being first in line was the only way to guarantee a phone on day one.
Times have changed, though, and depending on where you are in the world you can get that much anticipated smartphone via a telco, or via a smartphone company’s website or brick and mortar store.
But Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi, in an attempt to do things differently, releases new smartphones via unconventional, everything goes, online “flash sales” – and with great success.
Back in April during its “Mi Fan Festival” event, the company sold a total of 1.3 million phones in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore over a 12-hour period.
Following its recent expansion to the Philippines, the company will be selling its flagship Mi3 smartphone via a flash sale on Lazada Philippines on Thursday, June 26, at 12 noon. Only one variant will be sold, the 16GB metallic grey model. The phone will retail for P10,599 (approx $241.65).
Four modes of payment will be accepted: cash on delivery, credit and debit cards, Megalink and PayPal. Phones will be delivered within 1-3 working days for residents of Metro Manila and 3-10 working days for provincial orders. Interested parties should visit Mi.com on June 26 for a link to the Lazada sale page.
The Mi 3 sold 100,000 units under 90 seconds when it launched in China last December 2013. In Taiwan the record is 10,000 Mi 3s in just over 3 minutes while in Malaysia it sold 4,000 Mi 3s 17 minutes. A second flash sale in Malaysia sold an additional 6,000 Mi 3 smartphones in under 15 minutes.
The Mi3 runs on a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM and sports a 5-inch Full HD IPS display and a 13MP camera. With an Antutu benchmark score of over 35,000 it is as fast (or faster) than its more popular rivals the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8). – Rappler.com
