Sony’s PlayStation Network resumes operations
(UPDATED) Sony announces that the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network are back up

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Sony announced Monday, August 25, that the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network services have resumed operations following following a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS attack).

Sony earlier pointed out on that same blog post that “the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic.” Despite the downtime, the company assured users that no personal information was accessed.

Related to this, a plane carrying John Smedley, the president of Sony Online Entertainment was diverted to Phoenix from its route into San Diego reportedly following a bomb threat made by the hacking group that reportedly did the DDoS attack.

In a tweet, Smedley confirmed that the flight was diverted.

According to The Verge, the group tweeted at the flight’s operator, then followed up the bomb threat with messages to Smedley showing the two planes crashing into the World Trade Center, as well as a hashtag: #PrayForFlight362.

Sony Online Entertainment has little direct involvement with the PlayStation Network. It is, however, responsible for developing and publishing a number of massively multiplayer games, such as PC and console-based DC Universe Online, online shooter PlanetSide 2, and the Everquest online game franchise. – Rappler.com
