The main difference between the two is the absence of the low-pass filter in the 5DR, which will allow the camera to take sharper images
MANILA, Philippines – Canon broke through the 20 megapixel (mp) threshold of the 5D series by releasing two new flagship cameras – the 5DR and 5DS, both featuring a 50.6mp full frame sensor.

The main difference between the two is the absence of the low-pass filter in the 5DR. The low-pass filter is used by camera manufacturers in order to avoid ‘moire’ in images. Its absence will allow the camera to take sharper images.

With 50.6 megapixels to play with, thanks to Dual Digic 6 processors, Canon positioned the new offerings as an alternative for Medium Format shooters, saying both models provide attractive options especially when paired with any of over 70 Canon EF lenses.

Both models will have 61 AF Points (41 cross-type), ISO of 100 to 6400 – expandable to 12800, 1.6x and 1.3x crop modes, medium and small RAW image sizes, 5fps, CF and SD card slots. Canon still refuses to follow trend, putting 1080p 30fps video on both cameras.

Canon also beefed up its long exposure offerings with a slew of features – a new shutter mechanism for less vibration, reinforced baseplate for the tripod mount, built in Intervalometer, Bulb timer and Time Lapse mode which takes a series of photos and combines them into a full HD video.

The Canon 5DS and 5DR are slated for a June release with a retail price of $3,699 and $3,899 respectively. – Rappler.com
