Sony quietly unveils Xperia Z4 in Japan
Announced online and with no word yet of international availability, Sony's Xperia Z4 does not appear to be a big step up from its predecessor

MANILA, Philippines – Sony quietly unveiled its newest flagship smartphone – the Xperia Z4 – on Monday, April 20, amid reports of dwindling performance of its mobile division in the market.

Announced via blogpost on its Japanese site, the new Xperia Z4 is not a big step up from its predecessor, other than sporting a Snapdragon 810 processor from Qualcomm and running Android 5.0 Lollipop.

It retains the 5.2 inch screen with a 1080p IPS display, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB storage that’s expandable to 128GB.

The rear camera stays at 20.7 megapixels and is able to capture 4K video at 30 fps. Meanwhile, the the front camera is now a 5.5 megapixel model, featuring a 25mm wide angle lens with image stabilization.

Two-layers of coating were applied on the whole phone to preserve its shine, while corners were built with resin for additional strength.

Coming in at 6.9mm thin and 144g, it’s a tad lighter and thinner than the Z3 (7.3mm, 152g), but compromises the battery pack that’s only at 2930mAh compared to the previous 3100mAh.

The new Sony Xperia Z4 is IPX8 certified waterproof and IP6X certified dustproof. It will come in Black, White, Copper and Aqua Green.

Currently, the product is only to be released in Japan later this year with no word on launch date, carriers or price, though Sony Mobile CEO Hiroki Totoki said that the company is targeting the upper end of the phone market that’s occupied by Apple and Samsung.

The phone comes in the middle of Sony Mobile’s restructuring, after losing $1.2 billion on its second fiscal quarter last year.

In a report by Reuters last February, Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai said that the company no longer anticipates growth in the mobile market, and would instead focus on its profitable business of camera sensors, video games and entertainment. – Rappler.com
