MANILA, Philippines – New Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, known as /u/spez on the site, announced Tuesday, July 14, that he would be holding an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session related to changing content policy on the site. 

Reddit will hold the content policy AMA on July 16 at 1:00 am PST. 

During his announcement, Huffman set off a new flurry of controversy among Reddit users by saying, contrary to earlier statements, that Reddit was not created as a bastion of free speech. 

Huffman added, “Neither Alexis (Ohanian) nor I created Reddit to be a bastion of free speech, but rather as a place where open and honest discussion can happen. These are very complicated issues, and we are putting a lot of thought into it. It’s something we’ve been thinking about for quite some time.”

Some Reddit users – those who were resistant to any policy change in using the site – pointed out that Reddit co-founder Ohanian referred to the site as a potential bastion of free speech back in 2012.

In a Forbes interview, Ohanian replied to a question about how the following fathers might have received Reddit. He responded: “A bastion of free speech on the World Wide Web? I bet they would like it.”

They also pointed out that among Reddit’s few rules, it’s noted that the site is seen as a “pretty open platform and free speech place.”

The news followed the resignation of interim CEO Ellen Pao and the resignation of the site’s chief engineer, Bethanye Blount, less than two months into the job. – Rappler.com
