While it seemed like a shoo-in for success in the days before streaming content providers became a norm, the practice of selling and renting movies and TV shows piecemeal from a digital storefront appears to have fallen out of favor.
To that end, Sony's PlayStation blog announced on Tuesday, March 2, it was winding down the sale or rental of movies and TV shows on the PlayStation Store.
"We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles," the company said.
"With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021."
Movies and shows purchased through the PlayStation Store prior to August 31 will remain available for on-demand playback on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices, Sony added. – Rappler.com
