CONVERSATION: What voter registration issues do we need to address?
Let's have a Twitter conversation on Thursday, September 24, at 5 pm on how important it is to exercise our right to vote, and prevent fraud from as early as the registration process

MANILA, Philippines – Have you registered yet for the 2016 elections? A little over a month before the deadline for the registration of new voters and the updating of existing voting records, there are important issues to discuss about us being on this all-important list.

As of September 15, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) says that there are 3.1 million registered voters who have not updated their records with biometrics data. Without this update, a voter won’t be allowed to cast his ballot.

Registration seems to be a challenge especially for those in the National Capital Region (NCR), Region III (Central Luzon), and Region IV-A (Calabarzon) since more than 100,000 voters in these areas have yet to have their biometrics taken by the Comelec. Morever, a survey says that richer voters are the ones who lack biometrics data(Check out this map to know more about the areas without biometrics.)

Do these numbers indicate lack of interest among qualified voters? In the long run, would this indicate indifference to possible forms of election cheating being committed in as early as the registration process? (READ: Cheats are messing with the voters’ list)

Registration is ongoing until October 31. Here’s a list of Comelec satellite voters’ registration schedules. Take note that Comelec is open for voters’ registration even on Saturdays and holidays.

But first, let’s have a Twitter conversation on how important it is to exercise our right to vote, and how in the process we can help fight voter registration fraud and ensure clean and honest elections.
