7 hashtags that inspired Filipinos in 2015
Nowadays, hashtag presence is a must for advocacies and campaigns

MANILA, Philippines – During this eventful year, some incidents triggered emotions that made people want to be better or take action.

Rappler wraps up the hashtags that inspired netizens the most in the past 12 months.

#PopeFrancisPH

When Pope Francis visited the Philippines in January, Filipinos from different backgrounds gathered in the streets of Manila – braving the rain and heavy traffic – and on social media to hopefully catch a glimpse of the Pope.

Inspiration manifested in tears and smiles. The Catholic faithful basked in his rare presence.

Rappler launched #ShowThePope, a platform that encouraged netizens to post photos or tweet messages reflecting what they want to show to the Pope. Despite being in the midst of a massive crowd and rain, Filipinos sent in inspiring photos that were then personally given to Pope Francis as a gift.

I came prepared. We were prepared. Biscuits, 2 loaves of sandwiches (meant for sharing) chocolates (to counter hypogly), bottled drinks, raincoats, malongs and towels, garbage bags (which later on were used to safely tuck our things from the rain), ziplocks, 3 Sto. Niño, battery pack and fully charged cellphones, point-and-shoot and dslr camera equipped with telephoto lens. Amidst all these, most importantly, I came spiritually prepared. It, after all is a spiritual journey for me. I made a personal truce with myself that I MUST be there or else… So when friends asked me, how come I don’t have a picture of The Pope, simply because I wanted to cherish the moment, seeing The Holy See onboard the jeepney inspired Pope mobile, blessing the crowd, rather than reviewing my camera if I have a good shot or not. I could have used my reliable dslr but I chose not to. Memories of The #Pope, the people I have mingled with, the jokes to lighten the mood, the laughters and tears and the entire experience are all immortalized safely in my temporal lobe. #PopeFrancisPH #ShowThePope #PopeTYSM #PapalVisit #papafranciscomahalngpilipino #Luneta

#SalamatGilas

Filipinos rallied behind Gilas Pilipinas as the national basketball team battled it out at the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in October. During the games, #LabanPilipinas (Fight, Philippines) and #PUSO (heart) dominated social media posts. In many ways, it reflected the nation’s fighting spirit.

Even if the team fell short of taking home the gold, netizens were still proud of Gilas Pilipinas’ performance.

#MaryJaneLives

People were at wit’s end. Both the government and some non-governmental organizations were doing their part until the 11th hour to appeal for Mary Jane Veloso‘s life, as she was facing execution in Indonesia. To the relief of Filipinos, the Indonesian government decided on a last-minute stay on her execution.

The resounding plea that the #SaveMaryJane community made online immediately shifted to celebration with #MaryJaneLives. Her life was spared, at least for the time being.

If that dramatic turn of events wasn’t enough to inspire you, people were choosing their words carefully – sensitive to the fate of the 8 other executed convicts, including Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, ringleaders of a heroin-trafficking gang known as the Bali Nine

#LabanManny

The months leading to what some called the “Fight of the Century” reflected the sentiment of Filipinos towards Manny Pacquiao’s chances of beating the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. Filipinos were so inspired that Pacquiao fan art became viral.

Netizens migrated from using #LabanManny to #SalamatManny (Thank you, Manny) when Pacquiao lost via unanimous decision

#LoveWins

Americans might be the direct beneficiary of the legalization of same-sex marriage by the US Supreme Court, but some Filipinos also felt victorious. There is hope that one sweet day, the same thing will happen in the Philippines.

#MissUniverse2015

This year’s pageant was another victorious moment for the Philippines, when Filipina beauty queen Pia Wurtzbach won Miss Universe – considered to be among the world’s most prestigious beauty pageants.

As if Wurtzbach’s challenging journey from Binibining Pilipinas to Miss Universe wasn’t inspiring enough, she also handled the announcement mix-up with poise and grace. She is the 3rd Filipina Miss Universe, ending a 42-year title drought
