10 social media stories that caught your attention in 2015
MANILA, Philippines – When compelling news breaks online, there's always an outpouring of reactions from social media users. Sometimes, the reactions also become a story worth telling.
2015 was very interesting to say the least. Let's now look back at some of our social media stories that caught your attention during the year:
On September 15, Vice President Jejomar Binay visited UP Los Baños to attend the “Forum on Governance, Transparency and Social Transformation.”
Shortly after the forum, students were given the floor for a no-holds-barred question-and-answer session with the presidential candidate. #BinayVisitsUPLB trended on Twitter, together with the satirical #BinayBwisitsUPLB.
In February, a couple from New Zealand was caught on camera while having a little fun inside their workplace after office hours. Website stuff.co.nz later on revealed that the man in the racy scene is married with children and holds a managerial position at Marsh Ltd, a Christchurch insurance agency.
A math problem that first appeared in a test for Singapore's elite high school students last April baffled Internet users around the world after it went viral. A couple of days after it was posted online, netizens worldwide were offering detailed answers to the puzzle, but commenters were quick to dispute these solutions.
The Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) later on posted that the "mind-boggling" problem is actually a question from the Secondary 3 and Secondary 4 SASMO contests meant to "sift out the better students."
2015 was definitely a huge year for breakout loveteam Alden Richards and Maine "Yaya Dub" Mendoza. On October 24, #AlDubEBTamangPanahon generated 41 million tweets, beating their previous record of over 26 million tweets during their first date episode last September.
#AlDubEBTamangPanahon also broke another record previously set by the World Cup's Germany versus Brazil match in 2014, which pulled in 35.6 million tweets.
Earlier that month, Mendoza, Richards, Wally Bayola, and the producers of Eat Bulaga's hit Kalyeserye series received an award in the 1st Catholic Social Media Awards from church-based organizations Youth Pinoy and Areopagus Communications Inc.
A viral TV interview featuring actress and senatorial candidate Alma Moreno became one of the most-discussed social media stories last November.
Moreno, who’s running for senator in the 2016 elections under the opposition United Nationalist Alliance, appeared on ANC’s “Headstart” then trended online shortly after. The interview sparked an online frenzy, as she was described as "unprepared" for her TV interview about her senatorial bid. It also spawned head-scratching reactions and memes.

“You thought you won the fight?"
"Why? We didn’t (think you won) at ringside. The judges didn’t.”
Fans of boxer Manny Pacquiao from all over the world were stunned by his defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr in the boxing showdown dubbed the "Fight of the Century" last May. But while everybody was busy sharing their thoughts on the fight, Twitter users turned their attention to boxing commentator Max Kellerman, who drew flak for his arguably abrasive post-fight interview with Pacquiao.

In April, prayers and well-wishes for everybody's favorite bee were all over social media after a photo of a seemingly starved and skinny version of Jollibee was posted online.
Twitter users tried to figure out what went wrong and posted theories about the health of the fastfood mascot.
A social media "war" got out of hand last February – over surnames.
A student complained about her unusual surname in her post on the Facebook fan page FEU Secret Files, but no one expected that the comments section would explode with even more hilarious examples.
Nine months after it was posted, the viral surname war thread now has over 30,000 comments, 56,000 likes, and 12,000 shares.
Gilas Pilipinas may have failed to take down mighty China and bring home the 2015 FIBA Asia gold medal last October, but for Filipinos, it was a hard-fought championship match.
Shortly after the final game that resulted in a silver-medal finish for the Philippines, Twitter was filled with messages thanking the national team for the gallant stand.

However, some were also frustrated with the officiating during the game.
It was a crazy turn of events during the announcement of the Miss Universe 2015 winner, and it is one that the world will remember for a while.
On December 21, the Philippines ruled the universe once again after Pia Wurtzbach won the Miss Universe crown, the first title for the country in 42 years. But it was not without a shocker as host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner before apologizing and correcting himself a few minutes later.
The awkward moment became a gold mine of humorous memes from social media users worldwide.
