MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Rappler and Kickstart Venturesan investment firm that funds early-stage digital startups, have teamed up with Facebook to host a local viewing party and networking event for Facebook’s annual F8 global developer conference.

The conference is being held in San Francisco, California from April 12 to 13, and serves as Facebook’s curtain raiser for its newest products and features. (READ: Facebook’s F8 conference: What it is, what to expect)

F8 Meetup Manila will be held on April 13 at 5:30 pm. Rappler will be live streaming the event starting 6:30 pm. The meetup will feature participants from Kalibrr, Mozilla Philippines, Microsoft, Nokia, and a host of other companies and organizations. 

Speakers

Aside from the viewing party, representatives from Rappler, Kickstart Ventures, and its portfolio companies will also be giving talks. Here is the lineup of speakers:

Minette Navarette – president & co-founder, Kickstart Ventures

Minette is the president of Kickstart Ventures and is a member of the Ayala Corporation’s Innovation Advisory Council and Globe’s Innovation Advisory Board. She is also concurrently vice chairperson of Yondu, Globe’s technology solutions company.

Before joining Globe, she was managing director of online game publishing startup Level Up! She previously served as Levi Strauss & Company’s country manager for the Philippines and Guam; and president & CEO of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation. 

 

Gian dela Rama – CEO & co-founder, Innovantage

Gian is the chief executive officer and co-founder of Innovantage, a software startup that helps companies get work done. Their products, Cogito and Sinop, automate manual and paper-based processes, thus improving efficiency, saving costs, and enhancing customer intimacy. 

Prior to his stint at Innovantage, Gian was also the vice president for business information systems of MontPac, a global accounting, financial and business process management outsourcing provider. He was also the director of software development for Efficio Technology Services.

 


Joan Magno 
– product manager, Kalibrr

Joan is the product manager of Kalibrr, a fast-growing jobs portal. She acts as the bridge between business analysis and site content. She speaks with Kalibrr’s client companies and collaborates with the back-end teams to make sure Kalibrr is a product that delivers value. 

Joan graduated with a degree in Management Information Systems from the Ateneo de Manila University in March 2014. 

Rupert Ambil – executive director, MovePH

Rupert Ambil is the executive director for MovePH, Rappler’s citizen engagement arm. He began his career in the broadcast industry at the Philippines’ first 24-hour news channel Sarimanok News Network, now ANC, or the ABS-CBN News Channel. In 2000, he left what could have been lucrative employment to work for a non-governmental organization in Eastern Samar.

His love for journalism persisted and he found himself back at ABS-CBN in 2005 as a futures desk specialist and field producer. He left the company as head of field operations for the news division.


Russell Shepherd – chief technology officer, Rappler

Russell is a data analyst focused on the intersection of technology and society, with experience ranging from international counter-terrorism to social media marketing. He is co-author of “The Strength of Tweet Ties: How Twitter Helped Frame the Egyptian Protests” and “Mining Twitter Data from the Arab Spring.” Previous clients include The Carter Center, the United States Department of Defense, and Rappler, Inc.

 

Maria Ressa – CEO & co-founder, Rappler

Maria is president and executive editor of Rappler, the fastest growing news site in the Philippines. She has been a journalist in Asia for nearly 30 years – nearly a decade as CNN’s bureau chief in Manila and another decade as the global network’s Jakarta bureau chief.
