MANILA, Philippines – The world got a treat as the Moon approached its closest point to Earth in 68 years on Monday, November 14.
The phenomenon, officially called the “perigee moon” and more commonly known as the “supermoon,” is when the Moon appears larger in the night sky. This is due to the elliptical nature of its orbit around the planet.
State weather bureau PAGASA said that Monday’s supermoon was the closest perigee since January 26, 1948. It won’t be seen this close to Earth again until November 26, 2034.
In today’s busy digital world, we sometimes need a nudge to remind us to look up and appreciate the beauty of our surroundings.
Some of those who witnessed the supermoon shared their photos with us. Check these out:
In some areas, the view of the supermoon may have been affected by several factors such as the weather. For those indoors, a live stream was made available on Rappler.
Since the supermoon looked so dreamy – and it will take nearly two decades before the Moon would be that close to Earth again – we couldn’t help but be dramatic.
At 7:21 pm, the Moon will be at its closest to Earth since 1948. While waiting, tweet us your #supermoonPH hugot! https://t.co/BTLaDk6OGT pic.twitter.com/4YfHzEkPya

We challenged the Rappler community to come up with their own “hugot”-filled posts about the supermoon. “Hugot” in Filipino slang language essentially means a gut issue, or something that’s particularly emotional for someone.
Here are the best posts we’ve found.
This one’s unique – “hugot” in the form of a 140-character poem.

If you missed Monday’s supermoon, another one will occur on December 13, but it won’t be as close this one. Not in the next 18 years. – Rappler.com
