Should Filipino be scrapped from the college curriculum?

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) memorandum introducing a revised General Education (GE) curriculum for colleges and universities has caused quite a ruckus in recent weeks. The culprit? The ommission of Filipino language subjects, relegating them to high school and elementary. 

The memo is so controversial that educators have united against it, while the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education announced it will even investigate it in the 16th Congress. 

Will taking out Filipino be detrimental to the quality of tertiary-level education in the Philippines? Or is studying it in the years prior to college more than enough?
