MANILA, Philippines – After four games, Gilas Pilipinas men’s national basketball team has still failed to score its first ever FIBA World Cup 2014 victory, and tonight’s loss against Puerto Rico may have been the most heartbreaking of it all.
The country had waited for 36 years to be able to return to the world basketball stage and tonight, Gilas Pilipinas was officially eliminated from the World Cup.
Despite the defeat, supporters from social networking sites acknowledged the sacrifice and the gallant stand that Gilas Pilipinas showed as they battle some of the world’s best basketball teams.
Hashtag #GilasVsPuertoRico became a consistent top trending topic nationwide during and after the game. Four other World Cup related keywords managed to trend in the country.

On Thursday, September 4, Gilas Pilipinas will face Senegal at 8 pm (Philippine time) in the Philippines’ last game of the competition.
