MANILA, Philippines – At the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2014) in Las Vegas, computer and peripherals maker Razer intoduced a concept computer called Project Christine: a gaming PC with modular, easy-to-install components.

The Project Christine concept is a high-end gaming system consisting of a central backbone where self-contained parts – from the processor and graphics unit to the hard drive and memory – can be snapped on easily. Each module is individually liquid-cooled and kept quiet by noise cancellation features.

The completed modular computer would be monitored easily on a provided touch-screen display that offers control and maintenance information. It would also hold support for multiple operating system types.

As Razer’s press release says, the concept computer “will allow any user to build and customize his or her PC in any configuration without any prior technical knowledge.”

The company’s statement also says that due to the concept computer’s modularity, “the same PC can be easily and quickly upgraded without additional technical assistance and without the fear of incompatibility or obsolescence.”

While the concept computer is intriguing, it remains a concept in need of refinement. There’s no assurance that hardware manufacturers would support modular computing of this sort and, should this actually launch, it may require users to wait for Razer to release the modular component upgrades. These upgrades may not be released on the same day as the non-modular component.

Still, the promise of a friendlier way to build and customize a computer is something worth watching out for. – Rappler.com
