China has been in the news of late as Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Hong Kong this Thursday, his first since becoming leader of Beijing in 2003. Here in Manila, Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua turned over military assistance to the Philippine government to help it in its fight against terrorism.

President Rodrigo Duterte also disclosed that the Moro Islamic Liberation Front does not seem inclined to talk to terrorists in Marawi to end the crisis there.

In other news, the Philippines' Maureen Wroblewitz is "Asia's Next Top Model" season 5.

China's president Xi makes landmark visit to Hong Kong

Chinese President Xi Jinping makes a landmark 3-day visit to Hong Kong, his first since becoming leader in 2013. The visit will also mark two decades since the British handover of Hong Kong to China. Xi's trip comes at a time when there are growing fears that Beijing is threatening freedoms in Hong Kong.

China gives P370M in guns, ammunition to PH

China donated around 3,000 rifles and 6 million pieces of ammunition on June 26 to help the Philippines in its battle against terrorists in Marawi City. Worth about P370 million, the military assistance was turned over by Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua to the Philippine military in the presence of President Rodrigo Duterte in Clark Air Base, a former US military base, in Pampanga. The Chinese envoy said his government and military forces "will continue to firmly support your fight against terrorism."

PH meets U.S. standards vs trafficking for 2nd straight year

The Philippines remains in Tier 1, the highest level, of the US State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, that was released June 27. This means it fully meets the minimum standards "for the elimination of human trafficking" under the US Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000. The US uses the TIP ranking as basis for granting aid, that is why countries strive to get a good ranking.

Duterte says MILF not inclined to intervene in Marawi crisis

Intervention by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in the Marawi crisis is unlikely, President Rodrigo Duterte said on Wednesday, June 28. This is what he gathered from talks with MILF chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim during an Eid'l Fitr celebration he hosted in Malacañang the day before. The only way to end the crisis in Marawi is to flush out terrorists there, Duterte said.

Cyberattack disrupts operations of shipping giant Maersk

A global cyberattack disrupted operations at the terminals of Danish shipping giant Maersk, forcing it to shut down some of its computer systems and halt new orders. A number of Maersk's 76 container terminals were affected by the attack, forcing the company to run on manual systems. Ransom had been demanded for the release of data but the Danish group has refused to pay.

PH's Maureen Wroblewitz is 'Asia's Next Top Model'

Philippine candidate Maureen Wroblewitz is the first Filipino to win Asia's Next Top Model season 5 – besting Malaysia's Shikin Gomez and Vietnam's Minh Tu Nguyen in the finale challenge. The youngest and the smallest of the competition said her "once-in-a-lifetime experience" is something she will never forget.
