CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebu resident and citizen journalist Jose Farrugia sends in this video of the damage wrought by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Central Visayas Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The video shows scenes of collapsed buildings, cars smashed from falling debris, and hundred-year-old churches damaged by the quake.

Farrugia says he was half asleep when the quake hit at 8:12 am and describes being jolted out of bed by the violent shaking.

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum says the region experienced up to 110 aftershocks. After the initial shaking Farrugia went out into the streets of Cebu to record the damage.

Footage shows areas severely affected by the quake: Gaisano Country Mall in Banilad, Mabini Street, Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, GMC Plaza, and The Basilica del Sto. Niño located on Osmeña road. Osmeña road, one of the city’s main roads, has been blocked off by authorities.

The provincial governments of Cebu and Bohol have declared the provinces under a state of calamity.
