
MANILA, Philippines – On Friday, November 8, Super Typhoon Yolanda (international codename: Haiyan) battered the Philippines, causing massive destruction and killing thousands. The magnitude of the storm was simply overwhelming. The Department of Social Welfare and Development said Yolanda affected 9 million Filipinos in the Visayas region.
As of Sunday, November 10, at least 5 provinces in Region VI (Western Visayas) have been placed under a state of calamity: Western Visayas: Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, Negros Occidental. Local officials of Tacloban City, which was the worst hit based in initial reports, have urged President Aquino to declare a state of emergency or martial law in the area.
