MANILA, Philippines – On Tuesday, January 21, the office of Senator Loren Legarda, the Senate committee on climate change, and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) held a forum, “Strengthening Disaster Risk Insurance in the Philippines.”
Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan), the Bohol earthquake, and typhoons Santi, Labuyo, Odette, and Vinta ravaged the country in 2013, leaving Filipinos to cope with the harsh reality of loss and slow-moving relief.
At the start of 2014, with restored power in most of the Yolanda-hit areas and restoration efforts already underway in the Visayas, the fear of disasters remains.
Another disaster will bring with it familiar consequences to the people, the economy, public health, and much more. But for a nation still reeling from a year of natural tragedies, these consequences will only become worse.
What’s the state of disaster risk insurance in the Philippines? What financial systems must be in place for a sustainable disaster risk insurance scheme to thrive? Experts from UNISDR, the Willis Research Network, and the Corporate Climate Centre of Munich will share their ideas and knowledge at the forum.
