Guess which newsmakers we've challenged to help increase awareness about the ALS disease

MANILA, Philippines – You’ve seen your favorite international celebrities and some personalities do it – pour a pail of ice-cold water on themselves.

It is to raise awareness and funds for research that aims to find the cure for the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS disease. To be doused with water that cold supposedly gives you an idea what ALS patients feel.

The ALS is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. It results in rapidly progressive weakness and the loss of the ability to control muscles throughout the body. It affects only one to two people out of 100,000 in the United States, but its exact cause is yet unknown. There is currently no cure for the disease.

To date, hundreds of ordinary and famous people have joined the movement by posting their challenge videos online. And guess which group was tagged to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?

The Rappler Team was challenged by James Bitanga last Friday, and did its part on Monday, August 25. We did this for the victims and their families – like Rhenn Las, who lost his father Renato to the disease in 2001 – to whom ALS is no laughing matter.

To keep the campaign alive, we’re challenging the following to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge:

As the rule goes, they have 24 hours to respond and accept the challenge. If they choose not to accept, they will have to donate $100 to www.alsa.org/donate or to an ALS association of their choice. Or they can do both: take up the challenge and donate!
