SANDIGANBAYAN JUNKS REVILLA’S BAIL PETITION
Anti-graft court Sandiganbayan denies the bail petition filed by indicted Senator Bong Revilla. In a resolution released Tuesday the Sandiganbayan says there’s “strong evidence” that Revilla, his staff Richard Cambe, and businesswoman Janet Napoles, conspired to commit plunder and thus “not entitled to the constitutional right to bail.” Revilla faces a P224-million plunder charge for illegally diverting his discretionary funds to projects of fake Napoles organizations.
COA TAGS 5 GOV’T AGENCIES IN MALAMPAYA FUND SCAM
The Commission on Audit or COA tags 5 government agencies that obtained millions of dollars from funds for energy development project Malampaya but skipped government audit. COA Chair Grace Pulido Tan identifies the Public Works Department, Agriculture Department, Philippine National Police and Interior Department, National Housing Authority, and state weather bureau PAGASA. COA will release a government-wide performance audit of the Malampaya fund in the 1st quarter of 2015.
ONLY 2,000 ATTENDEES FOR POPE FRANCIS’ MASS IN PH
Safety reasons prompt authorities to limit the number of people in the Manila Cathedral when Pope Francis holds his first mass in the Philippines. Manila Cathedral rector Monsignor Nestor Cerbo says the cathedral’s capacity is 2,000. Only 2,000 priests, bishops, lay leaders will be allowed in the Cathedral during the historic mass in February 2015. Two other masses, in Luneta and Tacloban will be open to the public.
14 TAU GAMMA MEMBERS FACE CRIMINAL RAPS OVER STUDENT’S DEATH
The Justice Department or DOJ recommends the filing of criminal charges against 14 Tau Gamma Phi fraternity members for the death of student Guillo Servando, a sophomore from the College of St. Benilde. He died from injuries sustained during hazing last June. A month after his death, the Makati police and the National Bureau of Investigation filed charges against 20 individuals. The DOJ dismissed charges against 6 of them.
US LAWMAKER’S AIDE TO QUIT OVER OBAMA DAUGHTERS RANT
In the US – a Republican lawmaker’s spokesperson says she will resign after posting a Facebook rant about President Barack Obama’s daughters Sasha and Malia. Elizabeth Lauten’s resignation comes after the backlash from criticizing the girls. Lauten wrote on Facebook “Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar,” referring to the Obama girls’ short skirts while standing beside their father at an official function. Lauten later apologized, saying she judged the two in a way she would “never have wanted to be judged” as a teenager.
