VLOG: Flood in Dagami, Leyte

Once again, the province of Leyte is vulnerable to a typhoon threatening to batter a nation still recovering from the wrath of last year’s typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan.)

Voltaire Tupaz files this video blog from Leyte, where the roads are impassable due to river swells causing flooding in the town of Dagami.

I couldn’t possibly cross this road leading to Dagami town proper and to Tacloban city, about an hour away from here. Residents in this village say floodwaters have reached as high as 8 feet, inundating fields and even parts of the town proper.

MONTILLENO ROBRIGO, FARMER: Tikang iton ha bukid, iton tubig hit Sawahon ngan hiton Hinahaan River ngan hit Hiabangan nga nagkakatarampo dinhi ha amon kay kibali man in dinhi ha amon lugar pinaka-river bank. Ugsa makasangpot ha Dagami, aanhi anay nagkakatitirok.

TRANSLATION: The floodwaters come from the mountain, from the Sawahon, Binahaan, and Hiabangan rivers that gather in our place, our riverbank. Before they reach Diagami town, the waters converge here.

Farmers in this village worry about their livelihoods which have been barely restored after Yolanda. They say that when the floods recede, it’s back to zero as far as their recovery is concerned.
