What does the new year hold in store for the residents of Daram in Samar?

SAMAR, Philippines – In the town of Daram in Samar, the coming of the new year doesn’t exactly mean good tidings. Typhoon Hagupit (internatinal name: Ruby) ravaged the community, leaving their homes wrecked and their livelihood suffering.

Voltaire Tupaz reports.

Typhoon Hagupit’s storm surge wiped out Linda’s house in 2014.

LINDA GUDINES, DARAM, SAMAR RESIDENT: Makuri nga mawarayan hin balay. (It’s difficult to lose your home)

Linda and her neighbors in this remote island of Daram town in Samar say 2015 will be a tougher year for the fishing community.

REMIJIO RAMIREZ, FISHERMAN: It amon pagkaon, kay baga waray gud. Waray man pakabuhian. (We don’t have food because we also lost our livelihoods.)

Fish catch has declined. The community is struggling  to make ends meet on a daily basis. For now, they would like to start the new year with a new roof over their heads.

LINDA GUDINES, DARAM, SAMAR RESIDENT: Mag-orosa la kami hit am mga anak, tak pamilya maging malipayon la bisan waray nga magkaada kami hin balay.(Our wish is for our family to be always together, to be happy even if we lost a lot and to have a house.)

Goverment says Hagupit damaged more than 290,000 houses nationwide, about 42,000 of which were completely destroyed, including Linda’s.

The people may be resilient, but their houses are not. Just like the victims of other storms, Hagupit survivors will need all the help to pick up the pieces.
