Investors look forward to a Jokowi win. Gigi Reyes is rushed to the hospital. It’s Argentina versus Germany in the World Cup finals

Today on Rappler.

  • Investors in Indonesia look forward to a Jokowi win.
  • Gigi Reyes is rushed to the hospital after a panic attack.
  • It’s Argentina vs Germany in the World Cup finals!

Story 1: INDONESIAN MARKETS WELCOME PROJECTED JOKOWI WIN
Indonesian stocks rally on Thursday after most unofficial tallies show Jakarta governor Joko Widodo or Jokowi coming out ahead of ex-general Prabowo Subianto in a closely fought race to lead Southeast Asia’s biggest economy.
The Jakarta benchmark index surged more than 2.5% at the open.
Official results are not expected until July 22.
Both candidates declared victory Wednesday in the tightest and most divisive presidential election since the downfall of dictator Suharto in 1998.
Investors have been hoping for a Jokowi victory.
He is the first serious presidential contender without deep roots in the Suharto era.
Investors see him as a potential reformer and a clean leader in graft-ridden Indonesia.
Former Suharto general Prabowo is seen as less friendly to overseas investors.
His speeches on the campaign trail are marked by nationalist rhetoric and pledges to squeeze foreign companies in Indonesia.
While Jokowi also adopted a more nationalist tone during campaigns, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said he was seen as more market-friendly and open to foreign investment.
The bank says, “Investors were unnerved over the past two months by Prabowo’s rising popularity.”
Even if Jokowi is declared the winner, Prabowo can still challenge the result in the Constitutional Court.

Story 2: JOKOWI: I WON BUT MONITOR POLL RESULTS
Indonesia’s presidential frontrunner Jokowi tells foreign media he is confident of his win, but calls on people to monitor the results.
Analysts and observers say credible polling institutes put Jokowi in the lead with 52 to 53% of the votes.
Responding to criticisms he may have declared too early, Jokowi says what he did was not unusual.

JOKO WIDODO, INDONESIAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: It’s normally like that. During the gubernatorial election, there was a quick count as well, right? And then at around 3pm, when it was almost done, Pak Fauzi (Bowo, his rival), conceded, congratulated me, said ‘you won, you’re the governor.’ It’s the same. The quick count methodology is scientific. We can rely on this methodology, there’s no problem. But we should wait for the result from KPU (General Election Commission).

Despite this, Jokowi urges Indonesians to monitor the votes.
He says his camp is asking volunteers and supporters to watch the counting process closely until they are officially tallied by KPU.

Story 3: ECONOMY, NEXT INDON PRESIDENT’S BIGGEST CHALLENGE
Experts on Indonesian affairs agree, the biggest challenge to the incoming president of Indonesia will be the economy.
University of Monash Professor Greg Barton says both candidates have failed to articulate a clear vision for the economy.

GREG BARTON, PROFESSOR, MONASH UNIVERSITY: The dangers… with both of them we don’t know their economic policies will be. Prabowo would have a better team but the coalition around him, Jokowi might really struggle to form that team. He doesn’t have the numbers in parliament, an American parliament. And he’s burdened with his main ally PBI-P which is very much a mixed blessing. If Prabowo becomes president he’s biggest liability I must say is not his past, you know, those abuses allegedly. But it’s actually the present and the future – his temperament, he’s pretty much tied up with those past allegations. He’s quick to get angry and that might be kept in check if he wants to become an effective president.

Senior adviser to a past administration, Dewi Fortuna Anwar says whoever becomes president, will face enormous challenges, especially in growing the economy… and the security issues hounding Asia.

DEWI FORTUNA ANWAR, SENIOR ADVISER TO VP BOEDIONO: You have to deal with the economic issue, the equity issue. Then Indonesia also needs to become much more astute and adept in its foreign policy at a time when the Asia-Pacific region seems to be a region of increasing tension.

Official results have yet to be announced, but quick counts heavily favor Jokowi as the winner.
Barton explains, the phenomenon of the former furniture salesman goes back to the elections for Jakarta governor.
He describes Jokowi as “the guy you meet in the street, the guy who’s driving the taxi.”

GREG BARTON, PROFESSOR, MONASH UNIVERSITY: Indeed if you go back two years to the governors election, we would’ve thought, it’s governor of Jakarta a special district yes. But it’s not too important, who cares? But Indonesians cared tremendously about those elections. They were very very excited when Jokowi won against the odds. When he won with an ethnic Chinese running mate who may well take over as governor of Jakarta if he becomes President. Against all thoughts of black campaigning, he won against the odds. He comes through as the decent, honest non-political guy that many people have been longing for.

Anwar says, regardless of who wins, Indonesia “will consolidate its democracy.”

DEWI FORTUNA ANWAR, SENIOR ADVISER TO VP BOEDIONO: So this is not the case of a truly black and white choice, you know, one forward and one backward. Because whether it is the number 1 ticket, Prabowo; whether it is the number 2 ticket, Jokowi, both are running for elections using the existing democratic mechanisms and they have to abide by that. And they will be held accountable to the people who vote for them through this democratic process.

Story 4: GIGI REYES RUSHED TO HOSPITAL AFTER JAIL TRANSFER
The first night of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile’s former aide in a regular jail did not push through.
Police rush Gigi Reyes to the Taguig Pateros District Hospital Thursday, shortly after she was transferred to Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City Wednesday night.
The Taguig hospital says Reyes is in a stable condition but advised admission “for further workup and observation.”
In an interview with reporters at the Sandiganbayan, Reyes’ lawyers say she had seizures caused by a panic attack.
Doctors say she suffered from hypertension and an attack of neurocirculatory asthenia, a form of breathlessness.
Her lawyers say the presence of several female members of communist group New People’s Army in jail added to Reyes’ anxiety.
The Taguig hospital also notes Reyes has a history of coronary artery disease and Bell’s palsy seizure attacks.
Hours after Reyes’ confinement, her lawyer asks anti-graft court Sandiganbayan to reconsider her motion, seeking detention at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center, citing her health.
Both Reyes and Enrile face graft and plunder charges for pocketing millions of pesos in pork barrel development funds.
Reyes has been Enrile’s most trusted aide.
Enrile’s wife once confirmed the affair between her husband and Reyes.

Story 5: DOCTORS: ENRILE COULD SUFFER STROKE AT PNP CUSTODIAL CENTER
Doctors from the Philippine National Police or PNP say Senator Enrile could suffer a stroke if he is moved to the PNP custodial center.
Enrile is currently detained at the PNP General Hospital inside Camp Crame, following recommendations by PNP doctors.
The anti-graft court Sandiganbayan allowed him to stay in the hospital, pending the resolution of his motion for hospital arrest.
PNP Health Services head Chief Superintendent Alejandro Advincula Jr says moving Enrile to a place –quote — “not conducive” to his condition might result in complications.
Complications include a stroke should his hypertension be left unchecked.

Story 6: SATISFACTION WITH AQUINO GOV’T DROPPING SINCE PDAF EXPOSÉ
The satisfaction ratings of the administration continue to drop since the exposé of the pork barrel scam.
A Social Weather Stations survey shows the net satisfaction rating of the administration is down to 45% in March from 51% in December and 56% in September.
65% of respondents are satisfied with the administration’s performance in the March survey, down from 71% in December 2013.
The March survey shows the bulk of the respondents previously “satisfied” with the administration have become “undecided.”
Before the controversy over the fund diversion scandal, the administration’s net satisfaction rating was 66% in June 2013.

Story 7: PREPARING METRO MANILA FOR EARTHQUAKE SCENARIOS
The Philippines’ location along the Pacific Ocean’s ‘Ring of Fire’ makes the country a hotspot for earthquakes and other geological hazards.
Just last year, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit Central Visayas, destroying historical structures and leaving at least 222 dead.
Experts say Metro Manila is due for a big one.
A 2004 study says an earthquake hitting Metro Manila could kill about 34,000 people.
On July 2, the city government of Manila organized an earthquake drill to prepare citizens for a possible disaster.
PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum says people should be made aware of the multiple dangers during and after a strong quake.

RENATO SOLIDUM, PHIVOLCS DIRECTOR: Earthquakes would pose multiple dangers. Aside from the strong shaking, it can cause the collapse of buildings, fire can happen, if the earthquake is sourced offshore there can be a tsunami after, if the ground is soft there can be liquefaction where you can see roads being fissured or water gushing out of the ground with sand like a fountain, or if your house is on a steep slope, then there could be a landslide.

Solidum also says the entire Metro Manila area is vulnerable to a strong earthquake, even if houses or buildings are not on top of an active fault line.

RENATO SOLIDUM, PHIVOLCS DIRECTOR: For many people, they think that if a house is not on top of an active fault, then they’re safe…Despite the distance of your community from a particular fault, that will move if the house or building is not built properly it is weak for such and such ground shaking then people’s lives are in danger.

Solidum also says it’s important for communities to be prepared, because the aftermath of the quake could make it difficult to receive help.

RENATO SOLIDUM, PHIVOLCS DIRECTOR: Immediately after an earthquake, you need to think about the effects of the earthquake to Metro Manila not only in terms of building damage but also fire, impact to bridges, impact to transport systems, impact to the actual roads…Given that situation, people should not expect that immediate help will come to them right away and therefore it is a must for communities to have their own capacity to respond to their own neighboring communities so that they can respond to the effects right away.

Story 8: FLOODING, HAVOC IN JAPAN AS TYPHOON NEOGURI BATTERS MAINLAND
Typhoon Neoguri slams into the Japanese mainland Thursday, bringing widespread flooding, uprooting trees, and leaving houses half-buried under mud.
Nearly half a million households seek shelter.
The typhoon crosses Kyushu Island Thursday morning.
On Thursday, it’s expected to hit Honshu, where major cities Tokyo and Osaka are located.
Neoguri is also likely to reach areas near the tsunami-crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant.
The storm’s ferocity slowed overnight, now packing gusts of up to 126 kilometers per hour as it moves east-northeast at 45 kilometers per hour.
Officials report around 5 deaths directly or indirectly linked to Neoguri.
Nearly 50 people are injured.

Story 9: CHINESE HACKERS ACCESSED US GOVT COMPUTERS
The New York Times reports Chinese hackers accessed US government computers.
The hacking, which occurred in March, appeared to be targeting the files of people who had applied for top-security clearances.
The newspaper says the intruders accessed computers at the Office of Personnel Management before authorities caught them.
The attack was traced to China, but it’s not clear if the hackers belonged to the government.

Story 10: THE wRap: YOUR WORLD IN ONE READ
At number 4, tension between Palestine and Israel escalate Thursday after an Israeli air strike killed 7 people in the Gaza Strip.
This marks the 3rd day of a major cross-border confrontation, where at least 57 people died.
At least 29 Palestinians were killed in Israeli raids Wednesday.

At number 8, The British Broadcasting Corporation or BBC launches a new social media service in Thailand Thursday.
It will run for an initial period of 3 months.
The BBC says it’s an attempt to provide an alternative source of information to Thais, as they struggle under a military junta that imposed widespread censorship.

And at number 9, Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper apologizes to George Clooney because of inaccuracies in a story about his upcoming marriage.
Clooney slammed the story saying the mother of his fiancee, Amal Alamuddin, was telling –quote– “half of Beirut” she opposes the marriage due to her supposed Druze faith.
Clooney says his fiancee’s mother is not Druze and has not been to Beirut since they started dating.
The Daily Mail takes down the article but says it published the story based on information –quote– “supplied in good faith.”

Story 11: ARGENTINA ADVANCES TO THE WORLD CUP FINALS
In World Cup news: It’s Argentina and Germany facing off in the finals.
Argentina wins versus the Netherlands on Wednesday or early Thursday morning Manila time.
Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero saved two penalties in a shootout with the Netherlands.
This is Argentina’s first time in the World Cup finals since 1990.
They play Germany Monday in Rio de Janeiro.
The unexciting match was the polar opposite of Germany’s 7-1 annihilation of Brazil a day earlier.

Story 12: SOCIAL MEDIA POST OF THE DAY
For our social media post of the day: An anti-gambling ad goes viral… and backfires.
Singapore’s National Council on Problem Gambling’s ad features a boy saying his father bet his savings on Germany, implying that Germany will lose.
The real life twist: Germany just reached the World Cup finals after defeating Brazil.
The concern was unanimous – with Germany’s strong standing in the World Cup, the ad might end up encouraging serial gamblers to take the risk.
Singaporean government officials took to social media to comment on the ad.
Manpower minister Tan Chuan-jin says, “Looks like the boy’s father who bet all his savings on Germany will be laughing all the way to the bank!”
Trade minister Teo Ser Luck says, “Germany beat Brazil 7-1! Brazil need to find out what went wrong and I need to find the scriptwriter for the gambling control advertisement.”

Story 13: SAN MIG COFFEE MARCHES INTO HISTORY WITH GRAND SLAM FEAT
In the PBA, the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers claim a rare Grand Slam, defeating the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in a 5-game Finals series.
Jane Bracher reports.

Most teams win one championship. San Mig Super Coffee Mixers win a Grand Slam.
The Mixers defeated Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in 5 games to bag their fourth straight crown.
It’s also their third championship this season which gives them that rare title– the official Grand Slam.
Tim Cone became the only coach to achieve two Grand Slams, winning the first with Alaska in 1996.
This is also his 18th PBA title.

TIM CONE, HEAD COACH, SAN MIG SUPER COFFEE: I’ll have to sit down, turn off the lights, think about this one and let it sink in. The journey was really a journey of amazement for me, just watching these guys day in and day out. That to me is more special, just the fact that everything they did led to today. It’s not just today, it’s about the last 10 months of how much work they did to get to where they are now.

San Mig Coffee weathered the Rain or Shine storm in Game 5’s dying minutes despite James Yap and Mark Barroca missing crucial free throws.
Painters guard Paul Lee missed a couple of three-pointers that could have forced overtime.

PAUL LEE, GUARD, RAIN OR SHINE: Open look naman yun. Hindi lang talaga pumasok. Ganoon talaga. No regrets. Okay lang na-forget ko na yun. (I was open for the shot. It just didn’t go in. It happens. No regrets. It’s okay, I’ve already put it behind me.)

Yap was named Finals MVP for the second straight conference, finishing with 29 points in Game 5.

JAMES YAP, GUARD, SAN MIG SUPER COFFEE: Ang hirap makarating. Ang hirap mag Grand Slam. Yung team kasi namin kung meron isang down sa amin nagtutulungan kasi kami kaya siguro naging successful kami dahil yung team namin special eh. Nasasabi kong special, walang star player kasi dito eh, pantay pantay lahat. (It’s hard to reach. It’s hard to get a Grand Slam. In our team, if someone’s down, we help each other out. That’s why we’re successful. It’s a special team. There are no star players here, we’re all equal.)

It took 18 years for the Grand Slam to happen again.
And when it did, every name on the San Mig Coffee team is permanently etched in Philippine basketball history.

JANE BRACHER, REPORTING: Dynasties and legacies don’t happen overnight. It took Cone and San Mig Coffee years worth of practice, mistakes, failures, and small victories to reach this point. And in one night, everything came together. On this night, San Mig Coffee makes history. Jane Bracher, Rappler, Manila.

Story 14: ‘PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT’ NOW IN MANILA
Priscilla Queen of the Desert is now on stage in Manila in a uniquely Filipino production the original creators are raving about.
G Tongi reports.

Starring Guy Pierce and Terence Stamp on film, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is the story of two drag queens and a trans-sexual who go out into the desert on a pink bus they call “Priscilla”.
It is based on a book is by Australian film director-writer Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott. The journey becomes a meaningful discovery for the characters.
Jaime Del Mundo, Director of Priscilla Queen of the Desert  in Manila has been given creative license to mount a show that Filipinos will respond to.

JAIME DEL MUNDO, DIRECTOR: I’m proud of the fact that this is an original production. Priscilla with Filipino designers, Filipino choreographer, everyone’s Filipino. It is I think the first known replica production there is…and we received very good feedback from the people who own the rights.

Gary McQuinn, one of the original producers from the Broadway production is all raves on opening night.

GARY McQUINN, BROADWAY PRODUCER: Priscilla was invented nearly ten years ago now and every other production has been produced along the models of the original and for the first time, we’ve allowed a production in a key international city to be mounted in their own way…I have to say it was the right decision to make. I sat there more like a normal audience than I had ever been for Priscilla because I’m so connected intricately with every other production. And there were moments that just moved me, sometimes almost to tears…I sat there watching the play almost as if for the first time…And that’s not a gift I get very often in my business, in doing what I do. And so, I couldn’t be happier, and I couldn’t be prouder of this production, and I couldn’t endorse it more enthusiastically. It’s just a wonderful show done wonderfully well by your artists.

Makeup, costumes, props and sets are a spectacle to behold.
A retro soundtrack we all know and love will guarantee you will be singing and dancing along, and a cast that knows how to put the fun in flamboyance, headlined by Comedian Jon Santos, Leo Valdez, and the breakout star of the show, Red Concepcion.

JON SANTOS, COMEDIAN: For you to believe in love again!
LEO VALDEZ, THEATER PERFORMER: This is a really beautiful story, and the songs are woven into it and that’s what made it very special.
RED CONCEPCION, ACTOR: You will just enjoy. I assure you, you will be standing up and dancing. But more than that, i think Priscilla has a message of acceptance and a message of family.

G Tongi Rappler Manila.

Catch it before it closes on July 13 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
