GRACE POE OPEN TO 2016 RUN, BUT HAUNTED BY BETRAYAL OF FPJ
In a reversal, Senator Grace Poe says she’s open to running for higher office in the 2016 presidential elections. This comes after Pulse Asia released a survey showing her poll numbers almost double from 10% in September to 18% in November.
Poe, however, says she’s afraid. Her father Fernando Poe Jr’s ran in the 2004 presidential elections but was narrowly defeated by Gloria Arroyo in what many regard as a fraud-ridden elections. When asked what would persuade her to run, Poe said she’d rather not say.
GRACE POE, PHILIPPINE SENATOR: Nag-iisip ako ng mabuti hindi para sabihin na oo, kung hindi para siguraduhin kung saka-sakali ay handa ako. Ayoko sabihin yung tipping point. Baka gawin nila.
(I’ve been thinking hard not to say yes, but to make sure that, just in case it happens, I’m ready. I don’t want to say what my tipping point is. Some people might do it. )
ALMOST 400,000 NEED RELIEF, SHELTER – RED CROSS
Philippine Red Cross chair Richard Gordon says an estimated 390,000 people need food and temporary shelter assistance. Philippine authorities and aid agencies rush relief supplies to thousands displaced by Typhoon Hagupit, locally known as Ruby. Most of them come from Samar. Military cargo planes will deliver to Samar while two Red Cross convoys will deliver thousands of food packs, water purifiers, blankets, and hygiene kits.
BIFF BLAMED FOR DEADLY PH BOMBING
The military says the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters or BIFF staged a bus bombing in Bukidnon with at least 10 dead and 42 wounded. Philippine Army’s Major Ezra Balagtey says the bomb was similar to the one used in a November bus attack. BIFF spokesman Abu Misry Mama denies the group’s involvement.
US SENATE REPORT: CIA TORTURE BRUTAL, INEFFECTIVE
A report from the US Senate Intelligence Committee reveals the Central Intelligence Agency or CIA brutally tortured Al-Qaeda suspects but did not produce useful intelligence. The CIA used techniques such as waterboarding, sleep deprivation, physical abuse, and solitary confinement. The report adds the CIA misled the White House and Congress about the program’s usefulness in thwarting attacks. The US government warned embassies worldwide of reprisals following the release of the heavily redacted 500-page executive summary.
JUDGE BANS UBER IN SPAIN
A court in Madrid bans popular car-rental service Uber from operating in Spain. The court says Uber drivers “lack the administrative authorization to carry out the job.” It adds, Uber is unfair competition for taxis. Uber’s rapid growth continues to cause tensions in different countries. It is also banned in Delhi in India after a driver was accused of raping a passenger.
